Phase In Voice to Phase Out Distracted Driving

Today the Department of Transportation and NHTSA will hear public perspective and commentary on its recently issued recommended guidelines for minimizing distracted driving, essentially, from the ground up. NHTSA is engaging in a three-phase approach to investigate how in-car systems, devices and technology can be designed and integrated to reduce manual and visual distractions. The Phase 1 takes a look at the manual-visual requirements for in-car systems and devices, Phase 2 that of manual-visual requirements for portable devices, and Phase 3, the vocal and auditory requirements for both in-car and portable devices and systems. Nuance and Alltel Wireless are teaming up to offer a Voice2Text service so Alltel subscribers have the option of reading their voicemails, rather than just listening to them (so ancient history!).
